Irita Marriott contacted the BBC to offer her services to Antiques Road Trip, rather than waiting to be scouted. That direct approach has always been Irita Marriott’s way, and it’s been the secret to her rise from the back end of a Derbyshire auction house to one of the best-known faces in British antiques television. If you’re looking for Irita Marriott on Google, you’ll find a lengthy explanation of her history, her business and her home life – and a good chunk of it is a matter of public record. There are other things she’d rather not have to talk about.

From a Latvian Farm to an English Garden Centre

Irita Marriott. It was only after she moved to Derbyshire with her husband that Irita Marriott realised her enthusiasm for antiques. But the route she took to the right Derbyshire place wasn’t exactly straightforward. Raised in Latvia, she came to the UK at about age 20, but her route wasn’t a straight line from Riga to the Derbyshire Dales. She left home for an au pair job in the United States, landing in New York with only a pocket English dictionary.

She’d learned the language in a few months and had been in America for two years when she booked a short holiday back to Latvia, before going back to America – which, as these things sometimes happen, was the beginning of a journey that saw her on a bus to Britain.

After moving to the UK, she didn’t jump straight into the antiques business. Her first gig in the UK was a brief temporary position at a garden centre in the run-up to Christmas, where she started at the bottom of a department and worked her way up to a buying position. It was a no-glamour position but one that gave her the retail and sourcing skills that she’d later put to good use in the antiques business.

Learning the Trade in Derbyshire

The true defining moment, she says, was when she took a job as a cataloguer and valuer at a leading auction house in Derbyshire. That’s the job Irita Marriott really learned the ropes – how to identify an object, how to establish provenance, and how to decipher what the buyers were after. This is unglamorous, detail-heavy stuff that you’ll never hear of in the credits of Antiques Roadshow but marks out those with expertise from those who just blather on about antiques.

As she describes herself, she has been in the antiques trade for about eight years, working as a cataloguer and valuer at the Derbyshire auction house before she took to dealing full time. She launched her business in 2020. Irita Marriott Antiques is a dealer in quirky decorative objects from all over Europe, based on the concept of items that felt both high-end and affordable rather than for collectors alone.

She became something of a porcelain specialist – she is frequently cited as a porcelain expert who particularly appreciates craftsmanship and objects that comfortably locate themselves in modern spaces, be that a Victorian vase or a piece of Mid-Century furniture.

Getting Onto Antiques Road Trip

Here’s the part most people don’t expect: Irita Marriott wasn’t discovered by a producer or recommended by a contact. She emailed the Antiques Road Trip team with a “cheeky” offer to work on the show, and they accepted. She appeared in her first show in 2021, filming an episode of a road trip around Lincolnshire with partner Timothy Medhurst.

Since then, her television career has rocketed. She regularly appears as an Antiques Road Trip expert and has made Celebrity Antiques Road Trip and Channel 4’s The Greatest Auction before making the move to Bargain Hunt. She’s also hosted her own series for Really TV, The Derbyshire Auction House, which sees members of the public bringing in potential treasures for her to value and sell.

Compared to the hidden world of pure dealer stuff, this series has provided her with a degree of name recognition – “irita marriott wikipedia” is a search that people actually perform – even if she does not have a Wikipedia page of her own.

Opening Her Own Auction House

The TV work clearly spilled over into her business life. In 2023 she set up Irita Marriott Auctioneers and Valuers – among only a few women to run an auction house in the UK. It was a transition from being a dealer who worked on other people’s programmes to operating a new venture – commissioning, cataloguing, valuing and selling – which was completely her own, with her TV profile providing a constant form of advertising.

That’s quite a rare cocktail in the antiques world. There are many dealers with extensive knowledge, and considerably fewer who possess that and are also known to the wider media. One reason so many collectors, and even those just selling on their own, trust her opinion when she examines an object is because she didn’t just offer her expertise for a TV interview. She built an auction house on that reality.

Family Life, Kept Largely Private

Irita Marriott is very private, and stories about her personal life mostly come from her own or others’ outspokenness, not from tabloids digging into her past. She considers herself married with two children. Few details about her husband, such as his profession, have been made public, and the couple reportedly resides and works in the Bristol area.

Even her sons aren’t totally removed from her working life. She has told the press that one of her “favorite hobbies” is rummaging through flea markets and antique shops with her two children in tow, while noting they’re “coming along in the trade, too, and [she loves] seeing them grow excited over what they find and learn”. Her specific date of birth hasn’t been verified by any reputable source – and you might want to take any of the reported birthdates or ages floating around the internet (none of which are sourced back to her) with a pinch of salt.

Why People Keep Searching for Her

One appeal of Irita Marriott is that she doesn’t carry the usual angles of British antiques expertise: she is an immigrant who learned the trade from nothing, in a second language, working up from a garden centre rather than an auction house. That perspective makes her TV presence feel different: less “a family trade handed down,” more an obvious, hard-fought learning curve.

She’s also working at both ends of the business. The one who appears on TV and the working auctioneer whose own income depends on getting the valuations correct. That mix of roles naturally makes her more credible than a television talking head and may be a reason that she’s proved resilient to the one-series model and has continued to pop up on several BBC and Really TV programmes.
