Tyson Fury, for whom he has fought some of the greatest nights in the heavyweight division, has never had his mother in the front row of any of those nights. She’s never been to a boxing match of any kind, to attend or compete in. It’s the reason why the name Amber Fury led Google Trends after Netflix season 2 of At Home With The Furys was released.

Despite her husband, children, and their wives and children all being on screen, she was nowhere to be seen. Who is she, then, and why is she so difficult to track down? This article unearths what has actually been reported and highlights where the information starts to dry up.

Who is Amber Fury?

Amber Fury is Tyson Fury’s mother. She was previously married to John Fury, his father. Tyson was born in 1988 in Wythenshawe, Manchester, to Irish Traveller parents, Amber and John Fury. Published accounts of his background say his mother was born in Belfast and that his maternal grandmother came from County Tipperary.

Family history has been important to the boxing world, and Tyson frequently discusses his own. He has previously said that bare-knuckle boxing champ Bartley Gorman is related to his mother, and fellow undefeated bare-knuckle champ Uriah Burton on his father’s side. That now makes Amber part of her own Traveller legacy of fighting, despite the fact she’s never been involved in boxing herself.

A family history marked by loss

The story of Fury is nearly always narrated in the tale of his triumphant resolution, but the opening chapters had been brutal. For example, a frequent account maintains Tyson was born prematurely, and his father says the family had misplaced two sisters in the identical manner. That account states Amber had 14 pregnancies, with only 4 children surviving.

Other sources have a slightly different variation on the theme. They list Tyson, Shane, Hugh, and a girl named Ramona – who was stillborn – as John and Amber’s children. Their version doesn’t exactly match up with the others, so the precise number of children is ambiguous, but, in all fairness, Amber appears to have lost more than one. It’s one of those things, and it’s why Tyson has a tendency to speak of his mother as if she’s particularly fragile.

After the marriage ended

Amber and John were no longer in a relationship. After their separation, John later went on to marry his second wife, Chantal; their sons are Tommy, Roman, and John Jr. Tommy is the most famous of the Fury brothers, having been on Love Island and pursued his career as a boxer.

Much of this may be John’s version of events. In his autobiography When Fury Takes Over, he told the world that he met Chantal when he was still married to Amber and that he and Amber had their ups and downs. Amber has yet to tell her side of the story in a published form, at least that anyone can find. Anything other than John’s version and Tyson’s comments on the situation must be considered gossip.

Why she stays out of the spotlight

However, this is the part that piques the most interest. Unlike everybody else in the family, Amber has opted for a completely private existence. No confirmed reason as to why was ever released, and while the coverage labelled it ‘highly likely‘ that she is an extremely private individual.

Tyson has fed in some of the details himself. He has said that neither wealth nor fame moves his mother, and that she isn’t very aware of how famous he is. He has joked that his mother scolds him for buying her presents, because “only a mother could tell me off in that way if I was a multimillionaire”. At one stage he mentioned an internet search produces “not one picture of my mother on the internet”.

There’s a certain kind of inspiring to that in an age where everyone is over-sharing. A mother of a son among Britain’s most famous athletes has spared herself from all of this.

Why you won’t find much else

If you’re trying to dig up her age, her address, or her daily routine, there won’t be much information, and that’s just the way she probably wants it. A few caveats are worth noting:

  • Plenty of private people share the name, including accountants, students, and social media users with no connection to the Fury family. Profiles that surface in search results are not hers.
  • Some sites publish thin or recycled articles about her, which is a good reason to trust only coverage that cites what Tyson or John Fury has actually said.
  • Her maiden name, current whereabouts, and personal circumstances haven’t been confirmed in any source worth relying on, so they are left out here.

Not to be confused with The Amber Fury

Some of the search traffic for the phrase isn’t boxing at all. The Amber Fury is the debut novel of Natalie Haynes, a writer, broadcaster and classicist. It was published in the UK as The Amber Fury by Corvus in March 2014 and in the US as The Furies later that year. It was a finalist for the Deanston Scottish Crime Book of the Year Award.

This is the story of Alex Morris, a drama therapist at an Edinburgh pupil referral unit who gets a new lease on life after her fiancé is killed, when she uses Greek tragedy as the way into her students’ worlds. The teenagers, it turns out, take her lessons in revenge a little too seriously. If you were searching for a good book, that’s for you. If you just wanted to find Tyson’s mum, that’s for you, too.

What’s confirmed, and what isn’t

Here is where things stand, going by the reporting available today.

Reliably reported: Amber is Tyson Fury’s mother and John Fury’s former wife. She has stayed out of public life and has not attended Tyson’s fights. She isn’t part of At Home With The Furys.

Reported but inconsistent: The number of children she has had and lost varies from source to source.

Not confirmed: The reasons behind the separation beyond John’s own account, and any details of her private life today.

That may not satisfy anyone hoping for a juicy profile, but it’s an honest picture. In a family that lives out loud, Amber Fury’s quiet is the most interesting thing about her.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

Who is Amber Fury?

Amber Fury, the mother of Tyson Fury, was John Fury’s wife. She has children with Tyson & Hugh Fury, both boxers. Apart from the Netflix series, very little is known about her life other than the fact that she has maintained a low profile and not much is known about her.

Is Amber Fury still married to John Fury?

No. Tyson’s parents are not a couple. John Fury married Chantal after losing Amber, and they have sons named Tommy and Roman. John Fury claimed he was actually married to Amber when he began dating Chantal, and Amber has not been heard speaking out on her version of the story.

Why isn’t Amber Fury in At Home With The Furys?

No clear explanation has been provided for her absence. According to reports on the show, she simply prefers to keep herself to herself. Tyson has revealed she has never attended his boxing matches and isn’t interested in fame or wealth, which would explain her absence from the show.

How many children did Amber Fury have?

Tyson’s is usually listed as having 3 boys, named Shane, Hugh, and Tyson, as well as a daughter named Ramona who died at a few months old. According to one report of his life, he had 14 pregnancies and 4 surviving children.

Is The Amber Fury based on a true story?

Yes. Author Natalie Haynes, who wrote The Amber Fury, released it in 2014 in the US under the title The Furies, which follows a grieving drama teacher from Edinburgh who makes it her mission to teach her troubled students about Greek tragedy with deadly results. Not related to Tyson Fury’s mum.
